Dear White Liberals - calling Gillian Schutte, Samantha Vice and Pierre de Vos

Category: africa, politics

Dear White Liberals,

Let us, just as Trevor Manuel recently suggested, “drop titles for the purpose of a necessary exchange”. So let us forget for now that I am a normal i.e. [according to you racist by definition] White and that you are the liberal, noble, intelligent, educated, morally superior Whites that always feel that it is your God-given mission, much like a White man’s burden,  to defend and help liberate all the oppressed Black people of the world.

I want to address you simply as compatriot (South) Africans.

I want to put it to you that your obsession and unhealthy preoccupation with the USA imported doctrine of so-called “White Privilege” to South Africa, even after almost 20 years of democracy and Black majority rule in South Africa,  is against the letter and spirit of the South African Constitution, as well as the values espoused by the liberation Struggle and the great nation building project initiated amongst others by the African National Congress at the inception of the “new” South Africa in 1994.

I say this because the great African leaders who lead the Struggle, from Robert Subokwe and Steve Biko to Nelson Mandela, to Trevor Manuel and Jacob Zuma probably will not agree with your rather obnoxious brand of Racial Fundamentalism that you keep on pushing on your public pulpits as a means to advance your own narrow self-serving and in my opinion nationalist agenda. I say self-serving because you seem to build and advance your own careers by virtue of your extraordinarily virulent brand of anti-White liberalism, I don’t want to say that you seek favour from your new [Black] political bosses, but it certainly appears that way if you look for example at the background of Pierre De Vos: educated in the heydays of Apartheid at the Broederbond dominated University of Stellenbosch, then continued to enhance his [White] privilege at that very bastion of “White Privilege” - Ivy league institutions in the USA and now recently appointed as the Claude Leon Foundation Chair in Constitutional Governance teaching in the area of Constitutional Law at the University of Cape Town, yet another former bastion of [White] privilege some would say. All this while other less fortunate Struggle hero souls spent time in prison on Robben Island, those who were lucky enough to escape imprisonment got their education in the USSR because the USA government also supported Apartheid and was definitely not so accommodating of those “communists” and “terrorists”  so as to allow them entry into the Ivy League. Even Comrade Jacob Zuma, whom Pierre De Vos and other White liberals seem to hate with a passion because of “his backward traditional African” views, did 10 years on Robben Island while De Vos got indoctrinated into all sorts of fashionable and postmodernist theories including so-called “Critical Race Theory“. One wonders what Stephen Biko’s take on this situation would be - White liberals attacking traditional African values as they rage against “whiteness”. Also a fascinating anomaly there, because the USSR, Russia and the Cold War are of course not part of your breathtakingly racialised, myopic and unscientific take on contemporary history. How would one ever explain that your world view and Critical Race “Theory”, which essentially boils down to one mammoth historical conspiracy of “White Supremacy” against all the Black people of the world, is apparently contradicted by the fact that the population of the previous USSR who (unlike the Ivy League where your CRT originated) consistently opposed Apartheid, are overwhelmingly White and that these Whites supported liberation struggles against colonialism, oppression of Black people  and racism all over the planet? Never mind the modern day reality of the steady advance of China and India as new world powers and the so-called re-colonisation of Africa, how are you going to racially vilify them if they proceed to dominate economic relations in future. I assume they will have to be painted “White” to save your grand race theory,  the South African government will have to seriously reconsider when they recently “classified” Chinese and Indian people as “Black” for the purpose of our race-based Employment Equity legislation.

But Gillian Schutte, Samantha Vice and Pierre de Vos never give up on an opportunity to publicly attack their perhaps less privileged White compatriots. De Vos for example starts almost all his blog entries with a snide back-handed attack on the “predominantly White middle class” in general and Afrikaners in particular. He steadfastly ignores a growing proportion of poor Whites, most of them Afrikaners, as he also ignores the fact that after twenty years of Affirmative Action (AA) and Black Economic Empowerment (BEE), Whites now constitute a rather small minority amongst the South-African middle/upper classes. Apparently just like the former Cold War, poor Whites and the majority of middle/upper class Blacks simply do not exist in his imagined “White Supremacist dominated” world.  When he begrudgingly acknowledges the growing poverty amongst less privileged Whites he calls them “lazy” and “stupid”, they simply deserve it because [unlike him?] they should have taken more advantage of Apartheid when they had the opportunity to. Like most White liberals, De Vos is also a prominent advocate of the continued application of race-based Affirmative Action. Those young White kids who were born after the fall of Apartheid in 1994 are still riding the wave of their “White Privilege” and should just accept the fact that in future they will  increasingly be excluded from higher education and economic participation based on their race. This according to De Vos is a moral necessity so as to atone for the sins of their [in fact his own] forefathers.  However it never dawns on De Vos, given his own prolific accumulation of Apartheid privileges and his now enthusiasm for “racial equality” that perhaps he should lead by example and show all of us “privileged” Whites just how to atone for the past and “correct the demographic imbalances” by resigning from his very well paying job at UCT. Instead, just as with Gillian Schutte, he admonishes his fellow Whites for just complaining about the apparently trivial matter of future survival (De Vos obviously doesn’t have to raise any children) including but not limited to the continued impact of AA/BEE on the White minority, for not “making a contribution” by “getting their hands dirty”. It is really hard to understand given this envisaged regime of systematic racial exclusion from economical participation and public life just how these Whites are expected to make a “contribution”. Perhaps they must “contribute” by emigrating if they are privileged enough or alternatively also dropping out of the middle class into the ever growing unemployed White squatter camps.

Samantha Vice’s advice to all her fellow Whites is that they must just shut up and repent. They must not complain so much, nor should they speak their minds, even when billions of tax payer’s monies (including considerable taxes paid by “privileged” Whites) are misappropriated through a flourishing culture of  racial entitlement and chronic corruption that is resulting in an almost universal deterioration if not total collapse of public services, education and the health system in South Africa. Apparently, according to Samantha the democratic and human rights guaranteed to all citizens that the Struggle was fought over as articulated in the Freedom Charter do not apply to Whites - they must pay their taxes, retire from the public scene and be silent - that is their “contribution”. As for Gillian Schutte - well nobody can really understand what she is trying to say with this type of  unadulterated White bashing - “I call on white people to recognise how whiteness has unconsciously used blackness as a conduit for its own darkness and unacknowledged savagery.” Gillian also believes Whites should just “shut up”. Apparently Whites are to be blamed for just about everything that is wrong in South Africa, such “vile white practises”, one must assume even the greed, corruption and incompetence that have become a hallmark of the South African government and contemporary leaders of the ANC - “White people please just shut up for once and listen. Not everything is about white people being accused of racism. Sometimes it is about the black middle class and whether or not they have adopted vile white practices”.

So lets us conclude by imploring our White liberals to stop indulging in this tendency of public race baiting. It is not in anybody’s best interest, Africans of all colours and ethnicity, not Whites nor Blacks - only your own. Lets rather take the ideals of the Freedom Charter seriously, and let us not forget the preamble to our Constitution:

“We, the people of South Africa,

Recognise the injustices of our past;

Honour those who suffered for justice and freedom in our land;

Respect those who have worked to build and develop our country; and

Believe that South Africa belongs to all who live in it, united in our diversity.”
